Volunteer Guidelines

To ensure the health and safety of our animals as well as our staff and volunteers, we have guidelines in place that we expect all volunteers to follow. Before you apply, please read the following rules.

1. Treat the animals in a kind and humane way. Mistreatment of the animals will result in immediate dismissal and termination of volunteer privileges.

2. New volunteers must sign a release form and complete an initial training before they begin their volunteer work. Training by staff members will continue on as-needed basis.

3. You must check in with a member of shelter staff before beginning your shift.  You must sign in on the volunteer log upon arrival and sign out when leaving the building. Please do not sign both in and out upon either arrival or departure. Shelter staff will direct you to your tasks and provide important information on any animals you are going to work with. Unwillingness to take staff direction may result in immediate dismissal and termination of volunteer privileges.

4. Volunteer shifts are scheduled, so please do your best to be on time. If you are unable to make it to your scheduled shift, please call us. If we do not answer, leave a message to let us know not to expect you.  You are allowed two no call/no shows before your privileges are revoked.

5. The shelter is a smoke/vape-free area, and smoking is only permitted in designated areas. Volunteers are not permitted to smoke with shelter dogs.

6. Observe all the safety rules of our shelter, and handle only approved animals. Report any aggression (growling, snarling, or hissing) to a staff member. Volunteers are never asked to handle such animals. If you are injured, report the incident to a staff member and they will provide you with a First Aid kit.

7. Friends or other guests of volunteers are not allowed to participate in your volunteer work. Please do not bring anyone with you to just sit in the lobby during your hour.

8. Volunteers should not attempt to be spokespersons for the League (i.e. answering medical or behavioral questions about an animal). Refer all questions from the public to a staff member.

9. Direction of staff members must be followed at all times. If you are unable to follow staff instructions, your volunteer privileges may be terminated.

10. Attire Guidelines: Shirts must be inoffensive and pants should fit properly. No open-toed shoes, flip-flops, shorts, pants with straps or dangling earrings (all pose a danger to you and/or the animals).
